Islam Makhachev has placed blame on the team of Alexander Volkanovski after his brutal KO loss to Ilia Topuria at UFC 298.
Volkanovski has suffered back to back losses for the first time in his career with both being brutal finishes. The latest being a vicious KO by rising star and current featherweight champion Ilia Topuria. Many have criticised the quick turnaround between fights especially after Volkanovski losing by KO against Islam Makhachev back in October.
Islam Makhachev Has Given His View on the Rapid Turnaround Between Fights for Volkanovski
“Of course (he returned too soon),” Makhachev told MMA Junkie of Volkanovski. “Alex is a good fighter, he is a warrior, everybody knows. He can fight everyday. But I always said that his team is very bad because this mistake is not Alex’s mistake. It’s a mistake the team made because the team has to sit with him and tell him, ‘Hey, it’s too soon.’
“He had a very bad, tough knockout in his last fight. He has to rest for a minimum of three or four months without training, nothing. You have to do some recovery and just wait. He go to fight again too soon. It was a big mistake. He is a warrior, he can come back, but still, he needs some time. He has to listen to his body and give some time for recovery.”
It is unknown how much time Volkanovski will take off after his previous loss but hopefully for his own health it will be a considerable amount to recover and he has vowed to take tome off for his brain to heal.
The Australian has struggled with the time off outside of the octagon previously which undoubtedly played a part in his decision to return so soon.
Volkanovski has hopes of taking on Ilia Topuria and reclaiming his crown at featherweight.
