Jack Della Maddalena has been ruled out of UFC 305 following complications in his forearm surgery.
The Australian has seen his dreams of fighting in Australia shattered.
The unbeaten welterweight prospect also gave a timeline of when he would potentially be back and his plans for the rest of the year.
Jack Della Maddalena ruled out of UFC 305
UFC Welterweight Jack Della Maddalena (JDM) revealed that his upcoming bout on UFC 305 won’t be going ahead. Whilst an opponent wasn’t named it was expected the Australian would feature on the event.
Writing on his Instagram account Jack Della Maddalena said; ‘Ten days (after surgery) my wound had began splitting, which was indicative of infection. Went in for surgery 2 as believed to be infection present, bone cleaned, plate replaced. Stayed in hospital for 9 days on IV antibiotics then moved to oral antibiotics.
The Australian went on to write; ” Thought the infection was under control. The wound itself had a couple of abscesses pop up over a 5 week period which had been cut and drained, which had bacteria present.”
‘Had a further surgery yesterday to remove infected tissue and unfortunately some infected bone. I am going to have a further surgery or two to remove further infected tissue over the next week.’
Jack Della Maddalena also revealed that he was ‘distraught that he wouldn’t feature on the event. UFC 305 was set to take place in Perth. The welterweight said; “It’s a tough pill to swallow.”
Welterweight issues timeline on return
The unbeaten prospect who has a perfect 7-0 record in the UFC injured his arm early on in his fight with Gilbert Burns. Whilst the Australian recovered to win the fight by split decision, the injury required surgery.
Jack Della Maddalena issued a time line of when he expects to return and said; “At the moment I am focused on recovery, ridding my body of infection and allowing the bone to mend.”
“Planning to get my arm back to 100%, which if all goes well will be in 12 weeks time.”
“I am still motivated to compete before the year’s end in the fight. I believe is the toughest and makes the most sense.”
Who could Jack Della Maddalena fight on his return?
With Jack ruling himself out for a minimum twelve weeks before he starts training again. The question remains who could the Australian fight in his comeback fight.
Kamaru Usman would be a formidable opponent for Jack Della Maddalena with the former champion not having a fight lined up. Usman’s grappling skills and one punch knockout power would make this an interesting fight. Whilst Usman may be looking for one more title run a win for JDM could see him catapult to a title opportunity in the near future.
Another name been branded around is Shavkat Rakhmonov. The Kazak fighter also undefeated in the UFC. Blessed with a solid wrestling background and incredible boxing skills has seen ‘Nomad’ become a welterweight challenger. The pair have also traded words on social media with fans hoping the fighters can face off in the Octagon.
A clash does seem to be in store with welterweight champion Leon Edwards for the undefeated contender. With this injury and the amount of recovery time it will take for Jack Della Maddalena, it seems unlikely that the UFC will push him into a title fight immediately. A win on his comeback could see the Australian become the number one contender for the Britain’s belt.
