Jake Paul Calls Out Canelo Alvarez
Fresh off his unanimous decision victory over Mike Tyson, Jake Paul has set his sights on an even bigger challenge: a fight against Canelo Alvarez, one of boxing’s pound-for-pound greats. Known for his bold ambitions, Paul is ready to test himself against one of the best in the sport, even if it means risking a devastating defeat.
Paul Reflects on Facing Canelo
In the latest episode of his BS w/ Jake Paul podcast, Paul addressed the frequent criticisms of his career. He explained why calling out Alvarez aligns with his goal of silencing doubters.
“Generally, everyone’s biggest critique is ‘Fight a pro! Fight someone your age!’,” Paul said. “So when I said Canelo is the person, then everyone hates on that…wouldn’t the best opportunity to see me lose be going up against Canelo?”
Paul acknowledged the enormity of the task and the potential risks involved.
“People won’t be satisfied with my career until I get f**king flatlined…one of the best to ever do it, a legend, pound-for-pound great…yeah, it’s gonna be an insane fight. It’s gonna be hard as f**k I might get my a** beat and flatlined. But let’s f***ing find out!”
Paul’s Journey to a Canelo Showdown
Paul has faced criticism for his choice of opponents, many of whom have been MMA fighters or retired athletes. However, his recent performances have shown growth, particularly after rebounding from his sole career loss to Tommy Fury.
Since losing to Fury, Paul has won five consecutive fights, including victories over Ryan Bourland, Andre August, and Nate Diaz. Most recently, he defeated Tyson, a 58-year-old boxing legend, in a high-profile exhibition match.
Paul admitted he took it easy on Tyson during their fight, saying he didn’t want to deliver unnecessary damage. “I wanted to give the fans a show, but I didn’t want to hurt someone that didn’t need to be hurt,” Paul shared post-fight.
Despite the criticisms, Paul remains focused on elevating his career by taking on tougher competition, with Alvarez at the top of his wish list.
Canelo Alvarez’s Response
As of now, Alvarez has not responded to Paul’s challenge. The four-division world champion last fought in September, defeating Edgar Berlanga. While Alvarez has previously expressed openness to fighting Paul, he has also hinted at other opportunities, including a crossover bout with UFC superstar Conor McGregor.
If the Alvarez fight doesn’t materialize, Paul could consider revisiting a rematch with Fury. After his loss to Fury, Paul activated a rematch clause, though a date for the bout has yet to be confirmed.
What’s Next for Jake Paul?
Paul’s ambitions don’t end with Alvarez. He aims to continue building his legacy by taking on the toughest challenges available.
His post-Tyson suspension means Paul is unlikely to return to the ring until early 2025. With time to plan, Paul will need to decide whether to pursue a fight with Alvarez, a rematch with Fury, or another high-profile opponent.
Love him or hate him, Paul’s boldness and willingness to face criticism continue to make him one of the most talked-about figures in combat sports.
