Interview With Jake Smythe
GTFP 23, you return for the first time since March. How have things been since your title win on Unity FC?
Life has been good. Been training hard, improving each day and enjoying life.
As mentioned, you picked up the first title of your amateur career. How did that feel and mean to you? Many look at amateur titles in different ways.
It felt great to go in there and pick up my first title. It’s confirmation that I have moved one step closer to my main goal in life.
Sept 2, you will face Bertie Oakes for the amateur middleweight championship. There’s a lot of bad blood in this one from Bertie’s side. Can you just enlighten the audience about where the bad blood stems from and what the GTFP audience is in for when you collide?
Basically, backstage at Cage Warriors, Bertie randomly hit me with a left hook, which at the time, I thought was a small pillow. After realising, he hit me with his hand and not a cushion; I started chasing him down to put his lights out. Long story short, he was running backwards for his life, and his a**ehole fell out of his trouser leg in the process. Ever since then, I’ve been living in his head rent-free.
Smythe Talks Bad Blood With Bertie Oakes
Bad blood aside, when you look at Bertie’s overall game? What do you see, and how do you game plan for him? How do you evaluate his skill set?
I see a hype train, a guy that hangs around with a lot of big names and gets secondary clout, but that won’t matter on Sept 2 when I finish this bum.
Assuming adding a second title to your amateur resume would mean a lot, but how much sweeter is it going to feel to take the belt from Bertie Oakes?
There are no assumptions here. I will finish Bertie Oakes on the 2nd of September and collect my belt. A win over Bertie is no different to a win over anyone else. He’s simply a stepping stone on my journey to the top.
Finally, let the fans know what they can expect on fight night from you, the fight itself, and can you give us your official prediction?
You can expect to see me viciously knock this man out and then continue to hit him whilst he’s unconscious until the ref drags me off. I’m an aggressive and violent fighter, so expect to see controlled aggression and pure violence on September 2nd.
