As UFC 295 delivered two electric title fight moments, perhaps no fighter was more affected by the results than former UFC light heavyweight champion, Jamahal Hill. While it is clearly apparent that Hill is fired up at the opportunity to potentially win his belt back against the newly crowned champion of the division, Alex Pereira, it was the interim heavyweight title fight that piqued Hill’s interest. Tom Aspinall defeated Sergei Pavlovich by first round knockout that saw Madison Square Garden erupt in triumph for the Englishman. Aspinall, the new interim UFC heavyweight champion, has now become the hunted.
“I think Tom [Aspinall] is a stud, I think Tom [Aspinall] is like the new prototype of what heavyweights are,” Hill told TNT Sports following UFC 295. “I definitely wanna do my thing at 205 and then go up and eventually see him too. So, Tom, get ready for me baby, someday. I think he has great movement. I think his coaches focus on a lot of good things, the right things to give him the edge in this game. A lot of them have the same philosophy as my coaches have and employ with me and things like that. I think he’s definitely built the right way, the way fighters should be built. It’s exciting. I’m game. I’m always game. Anytime I see somebody exciting or new or they’re bringing something fresh to the cage, I wanna test myself against that.”
Injury Woes
‘Sweet Dreams’ last performance saw him defeat Glover Teixeira at UFC 283 in January. The fight crowned Hill the light heavyweight champion of the world, with an impressive performance that put the entire division on notice.
Unfortunately for Hill, he would suffer a ruptured achilles tendon in July that forced him to vacate the title before getting the chance to defend it. As it stands Hill seems confident about a guaranteed title fight upon his return, which would set up a huge fight between him and Pereira. Until then, he is forced to sit on the sidelines and watch. Hill expects to return to training in early 2024 and get back to the Octagon later that year.
