Jermaine Lewin makes the walk to the Octagon for the third time as an amateur at Battle Arena Birmingham this Sunday and is confident he shows new levels to his game.
Lewin, who stands at (1-1), last outing in the cage occurred in March of 2022, which saw him taste defeat for the first time. Unfazed by the outcome, Lewin remains concentrated on the task at hand and fully understands, win, lose or draw, that there are always positives to take away.
The Team Renegade athlete will square off with Jordan Cox on fight night. Motivated by a close friend and team-mate in Leon Edwards, Jermaine Lewin is laser-focused on in finding himself in the win column come Sunday evening.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Jermaine Lewin before his battle. Read the full interview below.
Interview With Jermaine Lewin
Fight night is on the horizon as you prepare to lock horns with Jordan Cox at Battle Arena Birmingham. Talk to me about your preparation ahead of this fight. Who have been your main training partners? Have you done anything different to usual etc.?
Hmmm, my main training partners in this fighting camp. have been Mati Mazurowski, Jai Herbert, Shay Ingram, Will jones & Tim Wilde. And no, I haven’t changed anything, but I’m improving and working on my crafts.
Before we start, I must ask, as I imagine preparing for this fight has had a different feel to it after Leon took the belt back after dethroning Kamaru Usman. Does that add any motivation to you knowing it can be done? How’s the team morale been in the gym since that special night in Texas?
It’s been a great feeling and a priceless moment seeing a very close childhood friend of mine win like a UFC belt. It has inspired & motivated me more and more. It has lit a fire in my belly to just stay in the gym and keep working hard. Regardless of all the odds and doubts, anything is possible. Just keep showing up.
Jermaine Lewin Talks Previous Outing
We last saw you in action at Battle Arena Wolverhampton. Unfortunately, the fight didn’t go your way, but you seem like the type of fighter who always takes positives away from bad situations. What positives did you take away from your bout with Shadid Vatsaev, and what lessons did you learn from that fight in particular?
Yeah, my last fight didn’t go as planned, but that’s just part of the game. You have to have a positive mindset in everything situation. The positive I took away from my last fight is I need to enjoy the journey and embrace it..! I learn a lot about myself and that fight I need to be smoother in a certain position.
I like to ask everyone I’ve yet to talk with how they got into MMA and what made them walk through the gym doors for the first time. Can you remember the experience and how you felt?
Rocky brought me to the gym. He was in fight camp preparing for his fight, and he just said have a good, so my first class was BJJ after that first training session. I fall in love with it, and I want to learn more about it.
Goals Within the Sport
You are very early on in your amateur career, but everyone has goals. What goals have you set out for yourself? Short and long-term?
I only start setting goals after my first fight. My short-term goal is to stay focused in the gym and keep improving my game. My long-term goal is to be a professional fighter and fight for a big organisation, and make my family proud.
I recently saw the picture of you holding the UFC welterweight strap, and it even gave me goosebumps. What runs through your mind when holding that?
I can’t believe I’m holding the UFC belt. It still doesn’t feel real holding the belt, but it’s a great feeling word’s just can’t describe it.
For those who haven’t yet managed to watch you compete. How would you describe your style of fighting and enlighten the viewers on what they can expect when Jermain Lewin competes?
I’m fun & entertaining. I love those who even come to watch me fight will enjoy my fights and continue following my journey. I can adapt to any situation. I want to be all-rounded.
Expectations From Opponent
Jordan Cox is the man in your way on Sunday evening. What are your thoughts on him as a fellow competitor? Have you managed to watch his previous work? Break him down for us.
Jordan seems like a decent grappler, and yeah, I have watched his fights. He will try to march forward, he throws a lot of leg kicks, and he always looks for the takedown.
Cox is (2-0) but has undergone a period of inactivity as of late. Do you feel that lack of cage time on Sunday will play a factor in the fight, giving you an advantage?
We will have to see how Sunday plans out.
Lastly, how do you see the fight unfolding? Can you give us an official fight prediction?
I see the fight only going to go one way.
I’m coming into this fight like a different beast & more focused than ever.
