UFC 291 has an early mixup as Joanne Wood announced her withdrawal from her fight against Priscila Cachoeira. Wood released the following statement on Instagram addressing her removal.
“Gutted to find out that I won’t be fighting July 29th. It is what it is and im going to try not dwell on this as it was out of my control. I invested and done everything I could and was ready for what was maybe going to be my last fight. I loved the extra altitude training that I went all in on to make sure I was best prepared and was feeling great with no injuries. If only fight camps went on your record (and you got paid for them ) I’m pretty sure I’m in the triple digits by now.”
Wood holds an 8-8 record in the promotion and is coming off a split-decision win over Luana Carolina at UFC 286. The veteran alluded to this fight potentially being her last and took time off from the sport last year. Stay tuned for more information about Joanne Wood and if her next fight will be her last.
Miranda Maverick Steps In
As for a replacement for Cachoeira, MMA Fighting reported that Miranda Maverick has stepped up on short notice to accept the fight.
Coming off a unanimous decision loss to Jasmine Jasudavicius at UFC 289, Maverick is eager to get back in the win column. Cachoeira on the other hand has been streaking as of late, winning 4 of her last 5 with three knockout wins including a 65-second KO over Ariane Lipski in her last fight. While Cachoeira has been able to bounce back from a rough 0-3 start in the UFC, she is facing one of her toughest tests to date in Miranda Maverick. The two will square off on Saturday, July 29th on the prelims of one of the most anticipated cards of the year, UFC 291.
