Lopez stated the most likely opponent the former champion will face.
Joe Lopez Talks Importance of Alexander Volkanovski Comeback
Since being brutally knocked out by Ilia Topuria Volkanovski has spent time away from the octagon. This is highly unusual for the Australian fighter who is normally so active in the UFC. When Alex was champion he would more often than not defend his belt every few months. Speaking to Submission Radio Joe Lopez said; “I would have said eight months was plenty of time. We are coming up nearly twelve months now. It’s a bit too long.
Lopez who has coached Alex Volkanovski since his UFC debut also highlighted any future opponents. This could be either Diego Lopes or a potential rematch with Ilia Topuria. Joe Lopez said; “It’s been too long of a break Alex is itching to get back into there (octagon). Diego is on a run at the minute you take a few wins and your confidence grows. “
Volkanovski Returns
Alex Volkanovski’s return is currently scheduled for 2025. The Australian fighter will be looking to reclaim his belt, with long-time coach Joe Lopez in his corner.
A win over upcoming star Diego Lopes will surely put Volk back into the title frame. Lopes who has soared up the UFC rankings looks set for a title fight in the future. Blessed with elite boxing skills and durability Lopes would be an interesting matchup for the Australian.
Volkanovski will be looking to avenge his loss to Ilia Topuria. The champion is fresh off a knockout victory over future UFC Hall of Famer Max Holloway. The Spaniard who is calm has the ability to end the fight at any given moment with his powerful boxing skills. Surely, a second fight will be in the offing as Volk aims to reclaim his belt.
