Joe Rogan Admits His Most Regretted Post-Fight Interview
Joe Rogan is the UFC’s most well known commentator and interviewer. Rogan’s popularity has come through his association with the UFC as well as his podcast the Joe Rogan Experience. One of the things Rogan is known for in the UFC is his post-fight interviews in the octagon. Now, this is standard industry practice with plenty of other commentators conducting post fight interviews for example Daniel Cormier. However, Rogan has become the face of post-fight interviews.
The ethics of post fight interviews is a subject of heated debate. On the one hand it’s useful to get a fighters thoughts immediately following a match on the other hand they have just been in a fight. Most of the criticism tends to be levied at interviewing the fighter who just lost specifically fighters who have taken a lot of damage or been concussed. This can be viewed as unethical for several reasons such as exploiting fighters emotional state, physical state, and mental state. And Rogan has questioned how ethical his interviews were.
Rogan Explains his Regret
On his podcast Rogan revealed the post fight interview he regretted the most that being his interview of Cormier after he was knocked out by Jon Jones in their rematch. Following the loss now ruled as a no-contest due to Jones testing positive for steroids Cormier was very distressed.
Rogan said, “The fight was crazy shocking how violent the ending was because Jon really did hate Daniel. I went to go talk to Daniel, and literally as I’m going to talk to him, he’s turning to me, and I have the microphone, I’m like, ‘Why am I interviewing him after he got knocked out? What the f**k is wrong with me’? I really care about that guy a great deal, and I just watched him get knocked out, and now his heart is pouring out, and he’s crying when he’s realizing he got knocked out and he lost the fight. It was all awful. So, I put up a post. It was haunting me all night. Nobody had said anything, nobody from the UFC got mad at me. It was just me thinking, ‘Why did I do that? Why did I interview him? I shouldn’t have interviewed him.”
There Rogan clearly expressed his regret over that interview and for good reason. The interview has been infamous for some time for the reasons Rogan expressed Cormier had just been knocked out and was very emotional. And then to add to it Cormier is a very likeable guy who people hate to see in such a state. So, Rogan comes to the conclusion that he shouldn’t have interviewed Cormier which yeah he shouldn’t have. Fighters who have just been knocked out in general shouldn’t be interviewed which is why Rogan no longer does it.
