Bellator announced on Tuesday morning that Johnny Eblen and Fabian Edwards will run it back when the promotion heads to the OVO Arena Wembley on 14th September.
Johnny Eblen vs. Fabian Edwards: The Rematch
The pair will go toe to toe with each other for the second time in under a year, following Eblen’s third-round stoppage over Edwards in Dublin, Ireland.
The Bellator middleweight champion is set to make his third defence of the belt. Meanwhile, “The Assassin’s” comeback victory over Aaron Jeffery was seemingly enough to re-enter title conversations.
When they first met at Bellator 299, it was an overhand right and some vicious ground-and-pound that got the job done for Eblen. Just 20 seconds into round three. However, all three judges had the fight scored differently before the knockout.
One judge had it two rounds to Eblen. Another scored it two rounds to Edwards. And the third official had it 1-1 going into the third. With it being a tight affair prior to the stoppage, it certainly makes for an interesting rematch.
How Their Paths Have Crossed Again
Since their last meeting, Eblen won the super-belt when featuring in the PFL vs Bellator: Champions co-main event against Impa Kasanganay in February. Nicking the split decision victory maintained the undefeated record of “Pressure”. Now it looks like something special has to happen for him to lose the strap at 185lbs.
Edwards was successful against Jeffery in the Bellator Champions Series: Belfast just three months ago by securing a unanimous decision triumph.
Although many might speculate whether a re-run of Eblen vs. Edwards is warranted. British fans are unlikely to complain. Seeking revenge on home soil in an electric OVO Arena is exactly what Edwards needs to give him that extra edge. And it’ll be just his second bite at the cherry to become the Bellator middleweight champion in under a year.
