UFC bantamweight Johnny Munoz has revealed he is looking to outsmart his opponent, Daniel Santos, at UFC Vegas 74.
The pair were set to clash at UFC 288 in early May but a Santos injury led to a postponement. They will now meet inside the UFC Apex this weekend, almost a month after the original bout fell through.
30-year-old Munoz is looking to kickstart his first UFC win streak against Santos, who has struggled for activity in recent years.
‘Kid Kvenbo’ broke down his opponent’s style in an exclusive interview with Combat Sports UK.
He said: “His style is very head-on, aggressive.
“He’s almost looking to self-destruct in there in a sense, which could be a dangerous guy but it’s also a guy that’s a winnable fight, there’s kind of a blueprint there to win.
“You just can’t get involved in his game, you just gotta outsmart him which I believe is the key to victory and I think it’s right there for the taking.
“Him being aggressive leaves a lot of openings for me to capitalise on, so he’s actually gonna help me out a lot by doing that.”
Munoz on the Bantamweight Division
The bantamweight rankings include some of the best fighters from the planet. From prospects such as Umar Nurmagomedov to veterans like Henry Cejudo, the 135 lb division is often looked at as one of the best divisions in the sport.
The winner of Santos vs Munoz will likely move one step closer to the hotly contested rankings. Munoz spoke about the difficulty of breaking into the rankings.
He said: “135 is just a very stacked division man, there’s so many fighters in there. I believe it’s the hardest division in the UFC, [the] most competitive division and it’s just stacked.
“Breaking the top 10, top 15 it takes a little work because there’s so many fighters in there. Especially the top 10 guys, they don’t like fighting outside [the rankings] or they’re just kind of sitting there fighting each other which I understand to a certain extent.
“I almost feel it’s safer to be in the top 10 than outside of it, it’s so dangerous. You don’t have to worry about fighting these young, upcoming killers.”
