UFC light heavyweight fighter Johnny Walker weighs in on Alex Pereira’s move to 205lbs.
Last weekend at UFC 287, we finally witnessed Israel Adesanya beat his long-time nemesis, Alex Pereira. After a close first round, “Stylebender” was able to starch the Brazilian in the second and recapture the middleweight belt. With Adesanya now back on top and well-known for being the most active UFC champion, fans were quick to speculate on whos next in line for a title shot.
Fans immediately called for the Pereira rematch due to his previous wins over the champ in MMA and Kickboxing. However, the Brazilian announced on his Youtube that he’s decided to move to his more natural weight class at 205lb. “Poatan” would be an exciting addition to the division, no matter who you put him against. You can’t really make a boring fight with someone as scary as him.
Johnny Walker Discusses Last Weeks Main Event
Seventh-ranked light heavyweight Johnny Walker spoke to James Lynch from Middle Easy about Pereira’s performance at UFC 287.
“Pereira was [fighting] with his hands way low. You can’t have a very good attack, but not much defence. I was like that before. I was full attack and no defence and this is why I got caught. I can knock anybody out, but can I protect myself? If you don’t protect yourself, that’s what happens. You get knocked out.”
It’s clear that Walker can see some holes in his fellow Brazilian’s game.
“Now that I’m mature, I understand more when I watched this fight and I see that Alex needs to work more on his defence,” Walker continued. “[Keep] his hands a little bit more high and tuck his chin a little bit low, protect with his shoulders so he can avoid getting knocked out and [taking] big shots. It’s all experience.”

Walker’s scheduled to face former title challenger Anthony Smith next month in the co-main event of a fight night in North Carolina. Depending on how this fight plays out, either fighter could be a potential opponent for the Brazilian’s UFC light heavyweight debut.
Walker speaks on the potential of Pereira moving to light heavyweight and a potential matchup with him.
“Everyone’s going to be happy to welcome him… Whatever the UFC books for me, I accept. If I get the opportunity, mission accomplished.”
