Jon Jones has admitted that he can’t stop thinking about Stipe Miocic, even at the most inappropriate of times.
Is Jon Jones ‘Too’ Focused on Stipe Miocic?
During an appearance on the ‘Overdogs‘ podcast, Jones revealed that he was having anxiety ahead of his matchup with heavyweight GOAT (Greatest Of All Time), Stipe Miocic.
“The way I look at anxiety, it just means that you care about the outcome and how you perform, and how you’re perceived.”
Jones continued, “I feel like when you get to a place when you don’t feel anything, is probably when you should hang it up… At this point, I still get really nervous man. I have nightmares about my opponents. I could be balls deep in some mmm mmm (laughs) and Stipe will cross my mind.”
The above quotes were originally transcribed by ‘MMA Junkie‘ however, the original video has since been deleted. A new video has been released where the statement appears to state “I have nightmares about my opponents… Stipe will cross my mind.” It remains to be seen whether the original comments will be left in or removed. Will Jon Jones Ever Lose?
Well, Jones certainly doesn’t think so. The perceived MMA GOAT believes that the taste of defeat is something that is not in his destiny.
Jones stated “I honestly believe that I was born to fight. I really believe it in my whole heart. Some people think that’s silly, but I think a lot of great athletes – people are really good at what they do, and it’s more than just what they can do in the gym. It’s something that starts way before. I honestly have convinced myself that I’m not designed to lose.”
Heavyweight GOAT or GOAT?
Jones and Miocic will come face to face in what truly is a clash of the titans at UFC 295 in November. The fight will see the greatest heavyweight of all time and former champion Stipe Miocic challenge for the belt. In the opposing corner, Jon Jones. The greatest of all time and current heavyweight champion.
This is sure to be a legacy defining fight whichever way it goes. A win for Miocic would see him solidify his claim to be the greatest heavyweight we have ever seen. For Jones, a win over the greatest heavyweight to ever do it would only further cement his greatness and tee him up to take the mantle of the greatest heavyweight, should he chose to continue to defend the title against the up and comers.
It has been rumoured that this fight could well be the last time both men grace us with their octagon presence and a double retirement has been widely reported to be on the cards. However, a win for Miocic would likely see him lay down his gloves and walk off into the sunset. Unless the lure of a highly lucrative rematch were to fall at his feet. A win for Jones would stand up against any of his previous wins but it will be interesting to see if Jones waits around for the fresh meat in the heavyweight division.
Fresh Blood
Jon Jones has accomplished more than enough to ride away into the sunset with a solid legacy intact. He absolutely does not need to prove anything to anybody.
However… Sergei Pavlovich‘s heavy hands await. A certain Mr Tom Aspinall may be the fastest and most well rounded heavyweight we have ever seen. Jailton Almeida continues his rise to the top and Jones will certainly not be short of options. Whether Jones remains to fight off the upcoming lions or not remains to be seen but he must first get through Stipe Miocic in a clash for the ages.
Do you think we could see a double retirement? Should Jones wait around for the fresh blood if he is successful? Let us know in the comments section.
