Former UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, claims he will become a UFC champion in 2023.
The story of Jones will be hard to replicate by anybody. The 35-year-old became the youngest UFC champion in history over ten years ago, and he did it rather comfortably. Many believe Jones is the greatest competitor to compete in MMA, which is difficult to see why he’s become so inactive over the years. Despite suspensions and antics outside the cage, nobody has been able to beat Jones successfully.
Time flies in this sport, and time doesn’t wait for anybody, including Jones. It’s been nearly three years since Jones has last stepped foot inside the cage. The American’s last victory came in the way of a controversial decision over Dominick Reyes to defend his light heavyweight strap.
For some time, Jones has been flirting with the idea of moving to heavyweight, which has resulted in him taking the necessary time off to bulk up and make the transition properly. It looks like 2023 is the year we finally see the move come to fruition.
Jon Jones Eyes UFC Championship Goal in 2023
Having spent enough time away from the cage during his prime years, “Bones” clarified his intentions with a recent tweet.
“#Champion2023”. Jones tweeted.
Very few have the skill set to attain two world championships across multiple weight divisions. That spot is reserved for the elite of the elite, and Jones most definitely falls under that category.
The uncertainty of how Jones will fair against the best heavyweights on the planet is what makes the transition exciting for the community. Having spent a considerable amount of time out, nobody really knows what to expect.
In terms of opposition, it was reported that the UFC are eager to book Jones vs. Francis Ngannou for the UFC heavyweight championship, which would draw immense pay-per-view numbers. However, due to Ngannou’s knee injury and ongoing contract issues, the UFC is allegedly looking at putting Jones against Curtis Blaydes, which stylistically isn’t the best of matchups for his heavyweight debut.
Do you think Jon Jones can win the heavyweight title in his first year competing in the division?
