Following the talk of Tom Aspinall challenging for the Jon Jones heavyweight title in the near future, “Bones” took to Twitter to get some things off his chest about the situation.
On the weekend past, Aspinall and Marcin Tybura faced off in the UFC London main event. The heavyweight Brit left victorious after a round one technical knockout.
Aspinall took full advantage of his post-fight press conference by calling out Jon Jones:
Jon Jones Twitter Rant Regarding Tom Aspinall Title Threats
“Another goal of mine is I want to motivate Jon Jones to stick around and fight me. That is my absolute dream.”
The 30-year-old elaborated on the call-out and divided deeper on yesterday’s episode of The MMA Hour:
“He’s (Jon Jones) fought a lot of quicker guys before, nobody quicker than me. Quicker than most heavyweights, being at light heavyweight, obviously. But, he’s never fought someone quicker than a light-heavyweight, who’s bigger than him before. Who, is super confident, with big fight IQ, not intimated, who’s young and fresh and doesn’t have a lot of miles on the clock. That’s what I think I bring to the table against Jon.”
Jones responded on Twitter, shutting down the legitimate challenge from Aspinall in a series of now-deleted Tweets.
“Everyone’s the next big thing until I beat them. And then it’s like well. Who was that guy anyway? Just a few months ago Gane was the absolute future of MMA. Best foot work, fastest heavy weight we have ever seen. The most athletic. Now everyone’s like who the hell is that guy.”
“Sometimes I feel like I’ve been in a deja vu, everyone’s going to be the guy to kick my ass. Meanwhile, I’m over here undefeated with a face full of gray hairs.”
Aspinall Responds
Aspinall, who took note of the Tweets prior to them being deleted, responded to Jones in a rather British manner:
“Jon, chill out mate”. Aspinall Tweeted
Jones has been the man at the top of the mountain for years and is no stranger to fans, analysts, and fellow fighters praising a rising contender to dethrone him. However, he usually quickly shuts the door on the doubt people throw his way, as he showcased against Ciryl Gane in March earlier in the year.
The next stop for Jones is a title defence against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295, which takes place on Saturday, November 11th, at Maddison Square Garden in New York. Miocic has been out of competition since March of 201, when Francis Ngannou knocked him out.
What do you make of Jon Jones’ comments on Twitter? Do you agree, or is Aspinall a real threat to his heavyweight crown?
