We all know Jorge Masvidal, the BMF, the man with one of the most captivating knock outs in UFC history, but what we don’t know and what we haven’t seen is the darkness that he’s been through.
Jorge returns to the Octagon this Saturday, the first time since his emotion fuelled loss to Colby Covington in March 2022, a loss which followed with a lawsuit brought against him by Covington.
The return of ‘Gambred’ comes this weekend in his hometown of Miami, Florida in the co-main event of UFC 287 against fellow contender Gilbert Burns. Many in the MMA world would be calling for a title shot for the winner and given the narrative with Leon Edwards, Masvidal is perfectly placed for a shot with a big win on Saturday night.
In a very candid and revealing interview Masivdal discussed his mental wellbeing over the last few years since his stellar 2019:
Jorge Masvidal on Pulling Himself Out of a Dark Place
“I’ve been amazing. If you’d have asked me (how I felt) eight months ago, not so much the same. I was in a very dark place,” Masvidal stated. “A lot of the time, when you’re in these dark places, you don’t come out. Or, you come out a lot stronger, a lot meaner, a lot tougher, a lot smarter. So, I just feel very blessed with where I’m sitting right now, because I’m in the drivers seat.”
Masvidal then discussed the impact of his first ever knockout loss to Kamaru Usman:
“(The KO against Usman) Sent me to a dark place for a very, very long time. My coaches and team said, ‘Hey, take a year off… Let your brain heal; your mind, body, spirit and soul get right.’ … I thought I had and then I got into the Colby fight… Also had three felonies, three different lawsuits, and I lost three times,” Masivdal elaborated. “A lot of numbers like that were sticking out to me, where I’m like ‘I’ve gotta change something up… I’ve gotta cut out a lot of negativity, toxic individuals, things, habits.’”
