Former UFC Welterweight Jorge Masvidal has teased a promotion comeback against Justin Gaethje for the BMF belt.
‘Gamebred‘ announced his retirement almost five months ago, after succumbing to his fourth successive defeat at the hands of division title contender Gilbert Burns. This would be the end of an illustrious career which included a staggering 52 professional bouts.
Masvidal fought for the first ever BMF title against Nate Diaz at UFC 244 via doctor’s stoppage. This would grow the Miamian’s legacy even further, although the 170 lb belt would have obviously been preferred.
The title was last fought for in July, as American duo Gaethje and Dustin Poirier battled it out in their second contest. ‘The Highlight Reel‘ emerged victorious, knocking out his octagon counterpart with a nickname-defining knockout via headkick in the second round.
Jorge Masvidal on Potential UFC Return
The career of Jorge Masvidal will be looked upon favourably in the future, and after two decades of fighting professionally, it’s certainly strange to imagine the UFC without him.
The 38-year-old has seemingly lost no love for the sport, and called out for a return against Gaethje.
He told ESPN in a recent interview: “I think he should defend it against me.
“That’s what should happen. If I was to come back to the sport. That’s a big if. I never knock off coming back to fight, ‘cause I love fighting. I love fighting. It’s my favourite pastime, It’s my favourite sport, it’s my way of life.
“So I can never say I’m not gonna fight.”
It will be incredibly surprising to see Masvidal return to the octagon, and many may not believe his claims. If he was to fight Gaethje at lightweight, he would also have to cut to a weight he hasn’t competed at since 2015.
‘Gamebred‘ addressed the Miami crowd at UFC 287 following his final bout against Burns.
He said: “I just don’t feel the same way when I get there. It’s been 20 long years, I love you all.”
