Tough veteran Josh Emmett scored a vicious KO at UFC 296 which is now a late contender for knockout of the year. After this huge win, the 38-year-old powerhouse has called for one of the featherweight greats, Max Holloway.
Josh Emmett Stars at UFC 296
Heading into UFC 296, Emmett was looking for redemption after back-to-back defeats in 2023, especially after a loss in February for the interim belt. His original UFC 296 opponent was Giga Chikadze, however, he suffered a pulled groin in training and Bryce Mitchell stepped up on short notice. An entirely different style of opponent had many fans and bookmakers leaning toward the Arkansas native.
Just shy of two minutes into the fight Emmett lands a tremendous right overhand which instantly crumbled Mitchell. Ecstasy soon turned to concern around the arena as the body of Mitchell convulsed on the canvas in some scary scenes. Since then Mitchell has released a video on social media confirming his health is in check which is great for all to see.
Calling for Max Holloway
On The MMA Hour, Emmett proposed his next match-up at featherweight as he aims to get back into title contention in 2024.
“He (Max Holloway) is the number one contender.”
Holloway has held his place as the number-one contender after back-to-back wins in 2023 over Arnold Allen and the legend Chan Sung Jung.
“He’s cleared out pretty much everyone in the division and fought everyone in the featherweight division but myself”. Emmett followed up, stating that “it would be an honor to fight him.”.
Holloway is the right man to call for because a win over him means a title shot is all but guaranteed, dependent on the result at UFC 298 where Ilia Topuria gets his shot at gold against reigning champion Alexander Volkanovski.
The veteran from California has well and truly punched his ticket back into that title picture with the win at UFC 296, could we see Holloway vs Emmett at UFC 300?
