The PFL returned this Thursday with a flyweight match-up between Juliana Velasquez and Lisa Mauldin. Juliana Velasquez was coming into this fight off the back of a unanimous decision defeat against Liz Carmouche. Lisa Mauldin was coming into this fight off the back of a first-round stoppage defeat to Dakota Ditcheva. Not only was the loser going to be eliminated from the PFL season. However, the winner could also be eliminated if they don’t secure the victory quickly enough and depending on other results. Will either of these fighters be able to keep their playoff dreams alive?
Juliana Velasquez Dominated Round 1
Lisa Mauldin was able to start strong as she flashed a left hook as the pair circled the octagon. Mauldin would follow this up with an inside low kick. After a series of kicks being missed by Mauldin, Juliana Velasquez would end up landing a punch upstairs. Velasquez would be able to follow this up with a one-two before Mauldin would once again miss with a kick. However, Mauldin would be able to land a body kick before eating a left hand by Velasquez.
Juliana Velasquez would go on to rock Lisa Mauldin when she landed a combination. This combination would see Lisa Mauldin get knocked down to the canvas. Juliana Velasquez would be able to get some work done before Mauldin would end up closing her guard. Velasquez would then land a big combination before pushing Mauldin back along the fence. However, Velasquez would continue to track down her opponent who went for a takedown. However, Velasquez would be able to keep this fight standing and then landed a left hand on Mauldin. Velasquez would then land a body shot with her left hand which would end up dropping Mauldin down to her knees. However, the bell would sound before Velasquez could land any ground and pound however, it appeared the bell saved Mauldin from the fight being stopped.
Round 2
The 2nd round would start with a front kick being missed by Lisa Mauldin. Lisa Mauldin would try a high kick but once again that would be missed before landing a leg kick. However, Juliana Velasquez would end up throwing combinations and damaging Lisa Mauldin once again. Mauldin then tried to bring Velasquez down again with a takedown however, this would be defended. Lisa Mauldin then ate a left hand before chasing down a takedown. Lisa Mauldin would then be open to strikes due to her chasing down a takedown. Juliana Velasquez would be able to get on top when Lisa Mauldin chased for a takedown. Once on top Velasquez was able to throw some ground and pound and the ref stopped the fight.
