The hopes and dreams of the UFC have seemingly been conquered and with UFC 300 right around the corner, the company has been established for many years and looks to be continuing stronger than ever onward to their next historical event.
There will always be improvements that need to be made and to be tiers above the competition, advancements and innovations need to continue the refinement of a polished product.
Once the dust settled after UFC Atlantic City, the discussion of the need for new fighter gloves has once again gained spotlight. The controversy over fighter gloves got stirred up after the finish between Chris Weidman and Bruno Silva that had several eye pokes, including two back-to-back, resulting in Weidman’s win.
Justin Gaethje Ready for a Change
It didn’t take long for a BMF’er like Justin Gaethje to hop on social media to show his distaste for the current glove design. Justin Gaethje seems to have had enough with the glove that exposes fingers enough to eye poke.
We all can agree that eye pokes can change the entire night for a fighter and could cause severe damage, potentially resulting in vision issues for their MMA career and the rest of their life.
Many believe that when Trevor Wittman developed his own MMA glove called ONX, we would be entering a new era of gloves and moving on from eye pokes. Even UFC lightweight Terrance McKinney recommended Wittman’s gloves.
When Rashad Evans presented the gloves to Joe Rogan years ago, it seemed to set the buzz around Trevor Wittman’s gloves.
Unfortunately, it looks like politics got in the way of the UFC and Wittman agreeing, and as of right now we won’t see eye-to-eye on making ONX the official glove of the UFC.
If another MMA company can capitalize on a new glove that would prevent eye pokes, the UFC might want to take their fighters’ frustration seriously as they might lose top talent for fighter safety reasons.
Fight fans, how do you feel about the UFC glove situation? Do you think that a new discussion needs to be made for a new innovative design?
