Justin Gaethje responded to Conor McGregors immediate callout after his UFC 291 win over Dustin Poirier.
UFC 291 marked the UFC’s first venture back to Salt Lake City after Leon Edwards’ historic knockout win just over a year ago. Headlined by the BMF title fight, after it was vacated due to Jorge Masvidal’s retirement back in April. With Lightweight superstars Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier promising to be an absolute barn-burner. It was a fight you can’t have blinked during.
After the fight, McGregor typically gave his thoughts on Twitter, saying he would ‘Slap around’ Gaethje if they ever fought.
McGregor hasn’t fought in over 2 years, after a leg-break injury in his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier. However, he has promised to come back this year, with a fight against Michael Chandler strongly rumoured. The two are currently coaching opposite teams in the latest series of TUF. But due to USADA testing laws, the fight is apparently not happening until 2024.
In addition, Gaethje and McGregor have already been lined up to fight back in 2019, before the ‘Notorious’ was forced to pullout because of a hand injury. 4 years on, there is obviously still bad blood between them. It just makes a potential fight that more intriguing.
After this, Conor continued with his Twitter rant; “I’m the real BMF he can fight for pennies if he wants, but I want spirits; I call the shots, I’m in it to launch shots; f*** Chandler, you want it call for it.”
Justin Gaethje Response to McGregor After UFC 291 Win
‘The Highlight’ responded soon-after in his post-fight press conference, stating; “I’ve never taken steroids, and I don’t want to fight someone who is cheating. And I probably shouldn’t even say that if I want the McGregor fight, but it’s the truth”. Additionally Gaethje had further comments regarding The Mac when he said; “I fight MMA. I like to fight big fights, I like exciting things, so it sounds pretty exciting to me. I’m not gonna fight someone on steroids. I’ve never taken steroids in my life, and I never will. Well, maybe when I retire, I might.”
Although it’s a fight which would give us absolute chaos, both pre-fight and in the octagon. Looking at the contrasts in form leading up to the potential fight, you can’t help but feel it’s slightly unwarranted.
McGregor has often been publicly accused of taking Steroids, especially since his dramatic body transformation over the 2 years he’s been sidelined. Although the Irishman has never actually tested positive for any banned substance.
Gaethje talked about McGregor not long afterwards in continuation after the fallout of his win; remaining uncertain on his future plans. Gaethje did totally rule out a trilogy fight with Poirier, while remaining insistent on a title shot.
“In the cage after the fight, I told Poirier, ‘Hey, man. Let’s both agree to never fight each other again. Unless you have to have it, then I’m here.’ But we’re 1-1, so we’ll see.”
He added after; “I would never deny him the opportunity, just like he didn’t deny me the opportunity. But I don’t want it to be my next fight.”
