Kamaru Usman isn’t pleased by his former foe Colby Covington’s call out of former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira
Colby Covington’s avoidance of top welterweight contenders continues with his latest callout of Charles Oliveira. On Submission Radio Colby for some bizarre reason thought it was a good idea to call out a lightweight. And in true Colby fashion decided to go about it in the most obnoxious way possible.
Kamaru Usman Disapproves of Colby Covington’s Charles Oliveira Call Out
Initially Colby led by saying ,”Charles Oliveira makes sense” as a potential opponent which just isn’t true. Charles is a top contender at 155 who only recently has lost to some of the best in the division. Charles also seems pretty driven to regain the 155 belt and is willing to fight other contenders unlike Colby. On top of this Colby is a top 5 welterweight who has managed to cling to a top 5 spot despite his inactivity. So why on earth is he calling out Charles?
He then goes on to spew some nonsense about being the ,”king of f*cking Brazil, everybody knows I run that f*cking country”. Hilarious given how many other well known Brazillian greats compared to Colby’s mediocre career. Colby also said, “Charles is a huge light weight” which isn’t entirely inaccurate Olivera is big for 155 but huge is an overstatement. To finish off Colby says he’s, “a better all-around Mixed Martial Artist” also blatantly not true. Olivera is easily more well rounded and has the wins to prove it having the superior striking and grappling.
Usman’s Thoughts
Kamaru Usman rather unsurprisingly like many fans was confused by the callout. The former welterweight king with 2 wins over Colby made his feelings known on the Pound 4 Pound Podcast. Usman rightfully pointed out how, “the Garry fight had a lot of heat on it” which is true. There was a lot of fan interest in the match up and the trash talk exchanges online. The fight also made sense with both fighters actually being top 10 ranked welterweights. He went on to ask, “if you said no to that fight then why would you now say you want to fight Charles Oliveira?”.
Usman also said, “That’s not a good look Mr Covington, that’s not a good look. I don’t get that, why would you turn down a young streaking guy like Ian Garry?”. Which he’s not wrong in that it is a bad look calling out a lightweight when you just called out a welterweight. However, Usman may have answered his own question. Garry is a young dangerous guy particularly for the ageing, rusty, inactive Colby we saw against Leon.
Garry would have the advantage in terms of youth and striking however his grappling is untested. This is what makes the match up son intriguing to see if Garry can remain effective against Colby’s wrestling. However, that ship seems to have have sailed for now with Colby Covington content to sit back watch his career pass him by.
