Former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is confident that Alex Pereira is the UFC’s pound for pound king.
UFC 307 was headlined by Alex Pereira and Khalil Rountree Jr. Pereira. The light heavyweight champion made his third title defence defeating the challenger by TKO in the 4th round.
Rounds 1 and 2 were difficult for the champion, with Rountree winning both on the scorecards. A spiritually empowered Pereira rallied between the following two rounds, leading to a stoppage in the 4th.
The victory was Pereira’s third of this year alone – with all three being title defences.
Between the activity and sheer dominance of ‘Poatan’, the champion has been hailed by many as the organisation’s pound for pound no.1. A sentiment supported by none other than Kamaru Usman.
Kamaru Usman Justifies Alex Pereira Being Pfp no.1
Usman spoke on the subject on a recent episode of his podcast, Pound 4 Pound with Kamaru and Henry.
He explained that Pereira’s finishing ability had to be commended, especially considering he has a smaller toolset to work with.
“I think he is pound for pound king because of the way he’s able to fight. Not the way he’s able to fight, but the way he’s able to make his opponents fight. And the way he’s able to dispose of his opponents.”
‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ went on to compare Pereira to Islam Makachev, Pereira’s closest P4P competitor.
“I love Islam and his abilities. I think Islam of course has more tools in the shed but for what you have to work with, Alex Pereira I believe he’s the pound-for-pound.”
