Kamaru Usman has shared his thoughts on why he believes Leon Edwards will come out on top against Belal Muhammad at UFC 304.
This weekend, Edwards will put his UFC welterweight title on the line against Muhammad, a matchup that wraps up a long-standing rivalry. Their previous bout ended prematurely in 2021 when an accidental eye poke from Edwards forced the fight to a halt, leaving Muhammad unable to continue.
Now, as they prepare to face off again, Muhammad is brimming with confidence after a nine-fight winning streak. Edwards, on the other hand, has successfully defended his championship twice already, taking on tough challengers like Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington.
On a recent podcast, Usman weighed in on the upcoming fight and explained why he’s backing Edwards:
Kamaru Usman Backs UFC Champion Leon Edwards to Beat Belal Muhammad at UFC 304
“Leon is starting to kinda settle into the seat [of champion]. He shouldn’t be, because I ain’t going nowhere yet. I think he believes that he’s the champion here. Leon is working on staying there. So, I’m gonna stay with Leon for this one. I think Leon might be able to pull this one out.”
In contrast, Henry Cejudo has shown support for Muhammad. He pointed out that if he were in Usman’s shoes, he would be rooting for the underdog challenger:
“Listen, I’m cheering for nobody. The fight happens whether anyone likes it or not. I’m gonna do what it takes to earn that fight, and then that fight is gonna happen.”
As for Usman, it looks like he’ll be keeping a close eye on the action, ready to seize his chance regardless of who wins the belt.
