Former dominant welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is adamant he can still be the best in the world despite current three fight losing streak.
Usman hasn’t fought since a decision loss to Khamzat Chimaev back in UFC 284 meaning he’d taken his third loss in just as many fights.
This included two back to back losses to current welterweight kingping Leon Edwards after the famous “pound for pound headshot dead” viral headkick.
‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has expressed a interest in taking some well deserved rest after a long and strenuous career which has seen Usman fight 12 times since 2018.
Despite the recent bad fortune Usman still believes he can be the best in the world and avenge his loss against current champion Leon Edwards.
Kamaru Usman Has Warned Up and Coming Welterweights
On his newly formed podcast, Pound4Pound with Henry Cejudo, Usman addressed the elephant in the room:
“The boogeyman is on sabbatical right now, that’s all it is,“I still got tread left in these tires and I’m still gonna show that I am one of the best, if not the best in the world. When [the title fight] happens, it’s gonna happen, but I don’t really care. Whether it’s with Leon [Edwards], I’ve already beat him…I’ve obviously shown I can beat Leon, whether it’s Leon or Belal Muhammad it doesn’t really matter…”
“There’s a lot of guys in that division right now that are exciting. Jack Della Maddalena, Shavkat [Rakhmonov], [Michael ‘Venom’ Page], Ian Garry, Gilbert [Burns] is still there…when I’m off sabbatical and I’m ready to come back, I’m gonna come back and ‘Imma do my thing.”
The self proclaimed boogeyman will be keeping close attention to this weekends title bout in Manchester between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad as he believes in a future against the winner.
Only time will tell if Kamaru Usman can return to the top of the kingdom he once ruled but one thing is for sure, he still has the fight that made him pound for pound #1.
