Former PFL champion and Olympic gold medallist Kayla Harrison has made a splash since arriving in the UFC. The initially there was excitement for the UFC signing one of the top women fighters outside the UFC. But, that was met with concern when it was announced she would be fighting at 135lbs Kayla. Kayla has competed as high as 170lbs+ in the Olympics and spent most of her MMA career at 155lbs. However this was put to bed when she made weight against Holly Holm who she proceeded to destroy.
Harrison Gives Her Thoughts
With her victory over Holm Harrison Kayla Harrison quickly ascended the rankings being ranked number 4. And with the manner she dispatched of Holm no one would begrudge the UFC if they gave Kayla the next title shot. However, that doesn’t appear to be the direction the UFC are going in with the rumours of Pennington vs Pena. In an interview Harrison revealed “that’s what I’ve heard to” in relation to Pennington vs Pena in August.
When asked about her next fight Harrison said, “know that they have a good plan for me. I believe in this company, I believe in their vision, and if they need me to smash another skull before I smash one of their [Pena and Pennington’s] skulls, that’s fine.”. So she trusts the UFC and is willing to fight other contenders before a title shot. What could make sense if for Kayla to fight the winner of Macy Chiasson vs Marya Bueno Silva.
Chiasson vs Silva will be on UFC 303 this weekend Silva being ranked number 3 and Chiasson number 7. So the winner would make sense as an opponent for Harrison. Harrison herself also liked the idea of fighting on the same card as the title fight saying ,”I would love that. I think that’s a good call, just in case one of those gets nervous”. This is a great idea and would make perfect sense.
So we could very well see Harrison vs the winner of Chiasson vs Silva on the same card as Pennington vs Pena. And then the winners of those fights fight each other. Hopefully we get an announcement soon for Kayla’s next fight who has brought a breath of fresh air to 135 looking to fill the hole Amanda Nunes left behind.
