Kayla Harrison, the former PFL champion, recently made waves in the MMA world with her decision to join the UFC instead of re-signing with her previous organization.
In a surprising turn of events, the UFC announced that Harrison would make her debut for the promotion at UFC 300, facing off against former champion Holly Holm in the bantamweight category. This move is significant as Harrison has predominantly fought at 155lbs and 145lbs throughout her career, making the drop to bantamweight a new challenge for the accomplished fighter.
Harrison, with just one loss in her MMA career, boasts an impressive record, having clinched victory in two PFL tournaments and securing two $1 million checks. Beyond these winnings, the former Olympian enjoyed a prominent status as one of PFL’s major stars, consistently competing for substantial purses against opponents considered less formidable.
Kayla Harrison Releases First Statement Since Joining The UFC
Despite whispers of a potential matchup with Amanda Nunes, nothing materialized, leading many to believe Harrison’s transition to the UFC was unlikely. Shedding light on her decision, Harrison took to Instagram to share her perspective.
“As I started competing, my goal was to be the best…the Olympic champion of #MMA,” Harrison articulated. “The @UFC presents me with the opportunity to be just that. It’s been an amazing journey to reach this point, and I’m grateful for every step along the path. The highs and lows have all shaped me and made me an even better version of myself. God’s timing is perfect, and I am sure of one thing: My time is now. Let’s goooooo!”
While the news of Harrison joining the UFC is undoubtedly exciting, questions arose regarding her ability to safely make the 135lb limit. UFC CEO Dana White, however, alleviated concerns by stating that the 33-year-old has successfully completed test cuts, asserting, ‘She’s already made 135 a couple of times.’
Harrison’s journey to the UFC signifies a new chapter in her career, one that aligns with her aspirations of being the best in the MMA world. As fans eagerly anticipate her debut against Holly Holm, the shift in weight class adds an extra layer of intrigue to this remarkable transition for the accomplished fighter.
