Kayla Harrison is a 2-time Olympic gold medallist and former PFL Champion. However, she has since signed over to the UFC and will face Holly Holm at UFC 300 this weekend. She has since had nothing but positive things to say about her first weight cut. The former lightweight will be stepping into the octagon as a bantamweight.
Harrison had a significant amount of success in the sport of Judo. Kayla was able to clinch a gold medal in Judo at the 2012 Olympic Games. She has since been able to thrive as she moved over into MMA. Kayla signed with the PFL banner and was able to win the tournament in 2019 and 2021. She has been able to defeat some notable opposition in the likes of Aspen Ladd and Larissa Pacheco twice.
Kayla has had her success in the PFL as a lightweight however, she has committed to fighting as a bantamweight this weekend. This has led to the main talking point of this week being how the weight cut has been. This is due to this being the first time she is trying to get down to the 135-pound limit. Many different people have predicted that Harrison wouldn’t be able to beat the scale and would come over the weight limit. However, Kayla Harrison has insisted that everything is on track to be able to gain weight and that she has felt some mental benefits of this new weight cut.
Kayla Harrison Talks About Weight Cut Ahead of UFC 300
Kayla Harrison was able to provide an insight into her move down to bantamweight to MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn. This weight cut looked to be the hardest Harrison would have to go through. However, this has since not been the case. Kayla Harrison has revealed there has since come a special perk which has came from this weight cut.
“One thing about cutting weight that I didn’t really realize is like, I spend a lot of time along,” Harrison said. “I have to do heat acclimation to get used to the sauna, so I spend a lot of time in the sauna alone. I’m doing a lot of slow, steady-state cardio, so I spend a lot of time walking or swimming or biking.
“It’s just me and my thoughts, and that’s really given me a new — I’ve leveled up, almost,” Harrison continued. “In my mental fortitude, in my spiritual life, in my focus, in my desire. It’s been a really nice perk of cutting weight. I just feel like I’m walking hand in hand with God right now. I’m dialed in.”
Harrison in the Title Picture With a Win?
Despite everything going well and looking to be going on the right track. Kayla Harrison acknowledges that hard work will still have to happen as weigh-in day approaches. If she can make weight then she will have to try and get through Holly Holm. With a win then she is right up there in the title picture. If Kayla Harrison can clinch the title then making this weight drop will be worthwhile.
