Khabib Nurmagomedov on Ilia Topuria’s Lightweight Move
Khabib Nurmagomedov has shared his thoughts on Ilia Topuria’s potential move to the lightweight division. The UFC featherweight champion, fresh off defending his title, has set his sights on the lightweight crown, targeting a high-stakes clash with Islam Makhachev.
Ilia Topuria Eyes Islam Makhachev
Ilia Topuria recently revealed his plans to move up in weight, sparking conversations about a potential title fight against lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. Earlier this year, Topuria fanned the flames of their rivalry by declaring, “I’d send Makhachev to the hospital if we fought in the street.” This comment triggered a war of words, with several of Makhachev’s teammates stepping in to defend the lightweight king.
While Makhachev prepares for his title defense against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 311 on January 18, Topuria has outlined another path to a title shot. He’s expressed interest in fighting former champion Charles Oliveira, believing a win over “Do Bronx” would solidify his claim as the next lightweight title challenger.
Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Take on Ilia Topuria’s Lightweight Ambitions
Khabib Nurmagomedov, now a mentor and coach to Islam Makhachev, weighed in on Topuria’s move during a conversation with Henry Cejudo. While praising Topuria’s talent, Khabib emphasized the importance of earning a spot at lightweight before challenging for the title.
“(Does he deserve a title shot) without fighting at 155lbs? No, I don’t agree,” Khabib stated. “Because Islam already gave a chance. People talk bad about like, ‘Oh, he already fought twice against Volkanovski,’ but the UFC pushed that fight, and the first fight was good. But why does Islam have to give three chances for the 145lb champion? It’s not fair for 155lbs.”
Khabib suggested Topuria should first defeat a top lightweight contender before earning a title shot:
“I think if he moves up and beats someone like Dustin Poirier or Charles Oliveira, then he’s next in line, why not?”
Can Topuria Beat Oliveira?
Khabib Nurmagomedov has predicted success for Topuria against Charles Oliveira if the fight materializes. “You know what I think, I think (Topuria) can beat him,” Khabib said.
Oliveira, a former lightweight champion, has showcased incredible resilience during his reign, often recovering from knockdowns to secure victory. However, Topuria’s exceptional boxing and knockout power could present unique challenges. The featherweight champion has gained recognition as one of MMA’s most dangerous strikers, holding notable wins and delivering the first knockout loss of Max Holloway’s career.
What Lies Ahead for Topuria?
At 27 years old, Ilia Topuria stands at a crossroads in his career. While his move to lightweight presents opportunities for legacy-defining matchups, it also comes with significant challenges.
