Khamzat Chimaev recently called out Colby Covington and accused him of ‘running’ from him. Whilst also saying that he’s going to fight the winner of Edwards vs Usman 3 which takes place in March.
Watching Chimaev rise through the ranks has been nothing short of incredible and somewhat similar to a certain Irishman. With him near the very top of the welterweight division, he’s now hunting for his next prey. Covington on the other hand hasn’t fought since last March where he competed against Jorge Masvidal and hasn’t been heard from since.
Due to the outcome of Chimaev’s last fight and missing weight by 8 lbs, his chances of a welterweight title shot are now uncertain. So a fight with Covington had been floating around and to potentially co-main UFC 286 under Edwards vs Usman. Now not the case.
But in a recent interview Khamzat Chimaev had this to say…
“I have no clue, either. At first, they said it was Colby Covington. We’ve been waiting for half a year. It looks like he doesn’t want it. They all call me out, but as soon as the UFC tries to make the fight, they start running. I think it’s going to be the winner of [Kamaru] Usman vs. [Leon] Edwards III, whoever takes it will face me.”

Chimeav also goes on to call out Robert Whittaker at middleweight after teasing his move up to be sooner than later.
“I think I will fight Robert Whittaker. He’s got no opponent. Paulo Costa ran away after talking that much about me and Robert so I will fight Whittaker. I want this fight, although I like him as a human being. He is a solid guy, doesn’t talk trash, doesn’t cross any lines. We are going to have fun at the press conference and fight each other.”

After Chimaev’s disastrous weight miss at UFC 279 by 8lbs his time at welterweight has since been questioned. Already having one fight at middleweight in the UFC it does make sense that he’ll eventually move up. The current champion Alex Pereria is arguably a very winnable fight as the champion isn’t very well-rounded when it comes to the wrestling department. Something that Chimaev is lethal with.
