Jamaican-born Leon Edwards has his eyes locked firmly on a new deal with the UFC ahead of the trilogy fight with Kamaru Usman.
The newly crowned champion is still riding a high after achieving his lifelong dream of becoming UFC welterweight champion. Edwards dethroned the then pound-for-pound king Kamaru Usman in the dying seconds of the fifth round at UFC 278 in August. A head-kick that would change not only the direction of his life but his family’s life.
The last time Edwards put ink to paper and signed himself a new deal was before his bout with Woodley in 2020, which was cancelled. Now being the man at the top of the mountain, Edwards aims to negotiate a new deal with the company.
Edwards spoke with the Mirror regarding his contract situation:
Leon Edwards Wants New UFC Deal
“I need a new one now, 100 per cent. Not yet because as far as dates and fights, that normally happens when you talk about fights because you use the fight to negotiate the contract. When it’s time to start talking about the fight and the date of the fight, we’ll start negotiating a new deal and go from there.”
For Edwards, an improved contract is more than earned. It would magnify the hard work, the setbacks, and the 10-fight win streak the Brit now finds himself one. It’s no secret that the luck had been well out of Edward’s favour the last several years, but some things got to give.
How do you think Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman will unfold in the trilogy?
