Slated to fight Kamaru Usman at UFC 276 on July 2 during international fight week, Leon Edwards is ready. Currently riding a nine-fight winning streak, ‘Rocky’ Edwards is coming off of a decision win over Nate Diaz.
Given the current situation at welterweight, it’s only right that Leon has a chance to fight for the belt. Despite fighting for the title in the near future, Leon hasn’t forgotten about Jorge Masvidal. The pair clashed following a UFC event in London. Since then, the pair have gone back and forth on social media.
‘Gamebred’ is coming off of a loss against Colby Covington at UFC 272 and is currently enduring legal problems. Even though Masvidal is riding a three-fight losing streak, ‘Gamebred’ is still seen as a prizefighter.
Leon Edwards REFUSES to Rule Out Fight With Jorge Masvidal
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Leon said: “I think our career, I’m going like this (pointing up), and he is going like that (pointing down).”
“It’s going to be difficult to balance it out if we can ever fight. I might just f*cking win the belt and be like, ‘F*ck it, let’s fight.’ So you never know. We’ll see.”
Going forward, it is increasingly likely that we could see Edwards vs Masvidal. Should Edwards win against Usman, his first title defense could definitely be against Jorge. The UFC never turns down a good money fight, so this could come to fruition should Rocky win the title.
However, it’s fair to say that Masvidal doesn’t deserve another crack at the title, given his current run. Even on a skid, Masvidal headlining a PPV card would definitely draw a lot of attention. Drawing eyes often leads to cutting the line in the UFC, and every time ‘Gamebred’ steps foot inside the cage, it seems to attract the masses of MMA fans across the globe.
Yet, there’s no doubt that Edwards is fully focused on Usman, but he might have one eye on Masvidal. Should the pair ever fight, who do you think will win?
