Former welterweight world champion Leon Edwards is scheduled to fight Sean Brady this Saturday. This fight will be an important one for the future of Edwards career with a loss being a major setback. Edwards last fight against current champion Belal Muhammad has caused serious doubt about the mindset of Edwards. So, the former champion cannot afford a loss however he may have to deal with more than just Sean Brady. Pictures have emerged online of what looks to be Edwards nursing a staph infection.
Leon Edwards Staph Scare
Here is the picture and it would appear Leon Edwards at the time of the photo was nursing some sort of injury on his right forearm. It is very possible that this is a staph infection having symptoms characteristic of staph namely the inflamed skin and divot. It’s also possible that it could be some other injury however it is unclear.
If Edwards truly has staph this could prove to make the Brady fight more of a challenge in several ways. Firstly, there is the infection itself, which can take its toll on the body. The infection can make it more difficult to train, and come fight night affects performance, particularly endurance. That is of particular concern given the fight is 5 rounds, and almost all of Edwards’s fights go to a decision. Then there’s also the antibiotics which can also really do a number on fighters.
Edwards addressed the concerns people had in a media scrum. When asked about the post doing the rounds Edwards said, “I actually did this 6 weeks ago. Took antibiotics for it it’s gone no effects cardio-wise or nothing know what I mean I’m fine. I don’t know if it was staph if it might have been a bite or something. But yeah, it was 6 weeks ago nothing affected I’m good.”
So according to Edwards the staph if it was that was about 6 weeks ago and is fine. Granted, he wouldn’t say if he wasn’t fine; however, it being from 6 weeks ago is a good sign recovery-wise. We shall see if that is the case come weigh-ins and fight night.
