Since his UFC 286 title defence against Kamaru Usman, the path for Leon Edwards has been clear. With Dana White and the UFC higher-ups stating that a match-up between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington was next for the welterweight gold.
With Edwards and fans alike questioning the decision to give the shot to Covington. Covington would come into the fight 2-2 in his last four. It appears White can’t be deterred and is adamant that ‘Chaos’ is next in line for the gold.
UFC London July 22nd?
Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but the UFC has been looking to schedule the bout for July 22nd per Sports Illustrated. Adding further fuel to the fire. That date in particular is potentially of note due to the UFC’s potential plans to return to London.
Fresh of the UFC 286 event which went down as a massive success for the UK. Holding the first UFC pay-per-view since UFC 204 in 2016. With the rise in British MMA clear to see in the time since UFC 204, it only makes sense for the UFC to further solidify their status on British shores.
If Edwards Vs Covington was to take place on this date, it would most certainly headline. This adds to the UFC’s July return where a main event fight may be hard to come by. With Tom Aspinall likely to return Vs Marcin Tybura. Arnold Allen is set to take on Max Holloway in two weeks. A welterweight showdown seems the optimal fit.
Leon Edwards Vs Colby Covington
With Leon reigning supreme and putting his rivalry with Kamaru Usman to bed. He currently sits atop the welterweight division as king. Taking out a dominant champion who has put together a 15-fight winning run, Edwards cements himself as a great.
Covington would enter the bout off a win over fierce rival Jorge Masvidal who he defeated via unanimous decision. Despite challenging for undisputed gold twice in the past. Colby would come up short both times to the man Edwards beat, Kamaru Usman.
The match-up between the two would prove an extremely interesting watch. With Edwards holding the clear striking advantage. It would be the weaponised cardio and wrestling prowess of Covington that would potentially pose problems. However, Edwards did an excellent job against Usman at UFC 286 to keep the fight mostly standing.
How would you see a bout between these two going?
