Sometimes bad luck can get in the way of a great matchup. That happened today when it was announced that English featherweight Lerone Murphy was out of his bout with Dan Ige next month.
The two were scheduled to meet at UFC Vegas 86 on February 10th, a featured bout on the main card. The fight was a crucial chance for Murphy to grab his first win over a ranked opponent in the UFC.
Violent Money TV confirmed the news with Murphy this morning. The UFC is currently seeking a replacement to step in and face Ige.
Murphy posted the following message to social media in response to the news:
Lerone Murphy’s Tough Journey
Lerone Murphy has been plagued with injuries since the start of his UFC career. Back in May of 2022, he was hit by a car while riding his bike, causing a massive gash to open on his head. The injury required surgery and forced the Englishmen out of his fight with Nate Landwehr, and out of competition for nearly a year. He returned in March to take on Gabriel Santos at UFC 286, a bout he won by split decision. He was also nearly killed in a shooting at just 21 years old, a situation that led him to the MMA career he has today.
Despite all the hardships he’s faced, Murphy has still found major success in the sport and the UFC. He holds a 5-0-1 record so far in the promotion and is currently the #14 ranked featherweight.
With just six fights in 4.5 years with the promotion, it’s no secret that Murphy hasn’t been as active as he’d like to be. This cancellation now brings his number of fizzled bouts to six in the same time frame. With all the promise Murphy has shown as a prospect, it’s quite upsetting to see yet another canceled fight.
