Levi Batchelor defeated Charles Grossin at Cage Warriors Academy Wales 9 to become the new featherweight champion. We caught up with Levi to get his thoughts on his performance.
What Went Down Between Levi Batchelor vs. Charles Grossin
Levi Batchelor is well-known for attracting a huge fanbase wherever he fights. This time was no different. In the quest for featherweight gold, the Welshman faced off against the number 1 ranked amateur in France- Charles Grossin. A high-stakes bout for both fighters as they made the walk to the cage closing the show as the main event.
The Championship Fight
Round one begins, and Levi immediately shows off his precision striking and begins to throw multiple combinations at Grossin. This is answered by some well-timed defense and circling out from the Frenchman. A spectacular display of back-and-forth striking takes place as both attempt to take the center of the cage. Round 2 begins, and once again, Levi opens up with a flurry of combinations. It was here where a perfectly timed head kick sent Grossin to the floor. Grossin pops back up and ignites a wrestling exchange.
The Beginning of The End
The two begin to grapple, Levi attempts multiple submissions, but Grossin shows his experience and battles off the threats. Scrambles take place whereby Levi manages to sink in a triangle choke, Grossin defends well, but Levi stays patient and continues to squeeze. Grossin taps. Levi Batchelor becomes the new CWAW featherweight champion via second-round submission. The belt is handed over, and the Welshman’s hand is raised.
Interview With Levi Batchelor
Firstly, how do you feel after successfully becoming the new Cage warriors academy Wales featherweight champion?
It feels amazing to retain the title of being the champion in the division, but it changes nothing about who I am. I’m still going to keep my head down and work hard, and the belts will win themselves.
Your opponent Charles Grossin was very tough in there, he toughed out a lot of damaging shots, did anything surprise you about what he brough to the fight?
If I’m being honest, I was clueless about what his game plan would be, he’s had a few submissions and TKO finishes, so I expected him to try and clinch at some point, but I think I was waiting for a few more strikes on the feet first. Then again, when you’re buckling to single shots, it probably will make you want to close the distance a bit quicker.
How does it feel to once again bring home the belt to Shore MMA, this time alongside team mate Befan Hall?
I’m very pleased to bring home another belt back to Wales’ number 1 gym and alongside a very deserving Befan Hall. I couldn’t be happier for him.
As you’ve mentioned, you spent a large portion of this camp out in Thailand, how much do you think this has benefited you as a fighter, and now as a champion?
My trip to Thailand was a phenomenal experience and one that I would love to do again at some point. I learned some amazing techniques, and details and sparred with world-class training partners. It definitely benefited me being fortunate enough to travel there, but at Shore Mixed Martial Arts, we are doing something special, and the world is just starting to notice.
It most certainly looks like you’ve found your feet in the featherweight division, is this where you intend to stay for your future career?
As an amateur currently, I would like to stay in the 145lbs division, especially for the same-day weigh-ins. However, who knows? I’ll keep everyone guessing. I won the belt at 135lbs, so that’s already two divisions being on top. Maybe I’ll go for a third in the future.
What’s next for Levi Batchelor? What does the rest of your 2023 look like?
There are a few events looking very nice in June and July. As for later in the year, it’s still a bit early, and I will focus on whatever comes first. But I will be having a big 2023 for definite.
Finally, is there anyone you’d like to thank or shout out following your performance last Saturday?
I’d like to thank anyone involved in my preparations and any supporters on the night, people that messaged, and people who watched online. I really appreciate the support. I’ve also got some fantastic sponsors that help me do what I love. There are too many to name; however, please check them out on my social media accounts. Also, a massive shout out to my parents, that make this career possible. Still, just the beginning, and a lot more to see from me.
