Newly minted UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira is looking towards a rematch against Israel Adesanya. Last night, he became one of nine fighters of all time to win a UFC title in two weight classes, including Conor McGregor, Daniel Cormier, Jon Jones, Valentina Shevchenko, Henry Cejudo, Georges Saint-Pierre, and Amanda Nunes.
“Poatan” won the belt in a stunning stoppage of Jiri Prochazka at Madison Square Garden. He immediately turned his attention toward his rival Israel Adesanya.
Alex Pereira Calls Out Adesanya, Again
After beating Prochazaka, Pereira called out his longtime rival and four-time opponent.
“I know that I’m not going to do what he did to me and make me fight three times to fight him at middleweight,” Pereira said in the Octagon. “I know it’s a guy we have a lot of history. I want to make this fight happen. Adesanya, come to daddy.”
Adesanya’s last fight came at UFC 293, where Sean Strickland defeated him by unanimous decision. After the fight, he hinted that he would take an extended break from fighting. This came as a surprise for someone who has been an oft-active fighter.
Despite Adesanya trolling Pereira, the light heavyweight champion maintained his composure. “Regardless of what he said, I was respectful, and I mean what I said,” Pereira said through a translator at the UFC 295 post-fight press conference. “I’ll give him a chance. He doesn’t seem motivated, and I think that’s a fight everybody would like to see, so I try to push him to come back.”
He continued, saying “Regardless of what he said, I was respectful, and I mean what I said,” Pereira said through a translator at the UFC 295 post-fight press conference. “I’ll give him a chance. Clearly, the Brazllian Pereira wants to run it back a fifth time. Their fights have all been entertaining, so there’s no reason why they couldn’t make a great bout again. Adesanya will likely have to work his way up to fight a champion at 205. Regardless, Adesanya would be making history by fighting Pereira once again.
