He was being honoured as part of the inaugural class of the ADCC Hall of Fame and coaching several of his students in their own matches. But despite this, Garcia was reportedly ready to step in on short notice if either Gordon Ryan or Andre Galvao couldn’t make it to the super fight. Now, let’s not forget the considerable size disadvantage Garcia would have faced against either of these two behemoths. And it’s not like he had been preparing for this moment – Garcia hasn’t competed in quite some time.

But when has that ever stopped him? Throughout his career, Garcia has been an underdog who defied the odds time and time again. And so, he came prepared to give either Ryan or Galvao a run for their money on just a few hours’ notice. In the end, both Ryan and Galvao made it to the superfight, and Ryan emerged victorious.
