At UFC 309 the first heavyweight bout of the night occurred. Marcin Tybura faced off against Jhonata Diniz tonight. This fight saw the vet and contender Tybura be tested against a prospect Diniz. This was a test for both to see if Diniz belonged in the top 10 of the division or if Tybura still belonged. We got our answer.
Marcin Tybura Slices His Way to Victory at UFC 309 Over Jhonata Diniz
Round 1 was not a particularly exciting round where Tybura established the takedown threat. Diniz was able to land some shots on the feet however early on Tybura found he could take Diniz down. As a result Diniz spent much of the round in bottom position.
Round 2 again saw Tybura utilise his grappling advantage however Tybura made more use of his position. Tybura threw ground and pound as well as mixing in some nasty elbows towards the end of the round. These elbows caused several cuts on Diniz one on each eye lid, one below his left eye, a cut on the bridge of his nose and on his forehead. Most of these began leaking blood immediately as elbows reigned down. However, Diniz survived the round.
But, after round 2 Herb Dean was concerned about the cuts and the doctors had a look. It was deemed Diniz was unfit to continue and the fight was stopped. This stoppage was controversial as Diniz seemed to show few signs of concussions. The cuts also weren’t impacting Dininz vision leading to confusion. Regardless, Marcin Tybura was awarded a stoppage victory.
Diniz seemed shocked that the fight was stopped and clearly was protesting. The fight appeared to be only going one way Tybura’s way. But, Diniz could have been allowed to continue. Diniz lives to fight another day and clearly has work to do primarily on his grappling and defensive wrestling. This was a fun fight to add to the collection of quality fights this card.
