Interview With Matthew Day
Saturday, October 7, you return to competition after a little break. Talk us through why we’ve not seen you since last year. And has there been any reason for that, or have you just been recharging the batteries?
The main reason I’ve not competed in a while was due to the fact I had three fight camps in a row. I wanted time to rest and improve in all areas.
With some time, outcomes are healing the body and getting quality time on the mat. Have you been consistently in the gym during that time away? If so, what new tools and improvements can we expect to see in your game?
I’ve spent most of my time away in the gym, and I would say during that time, the main changes have been my overall wrestling game has improved, my striking has become tidier, and my grappling has improved. I’ve not focused on a single discipline but tried to improve bits in all of them.
Although Rise and Conquer is essentially a TFT home show, you’ve yet to compete on the show and will make your promotional debut on October 7. How happy are you to get a home show and get a home crowd behind you?
I’m really happy and excited to be on a home show. The first and last time I fought local didn’t turn out too well, so I am looking to put that right.
Time Competing So Far
2021, you made your amateur debut; how would you assess your time competing so far?
I would say I’ve had a good time competing so far, whether it be a win or a loss. The experience from the fights is valuable. I’ve learned from the losses and used them to develop more as a fighter.
You’ll be faced with Callum McKinne on the night. Watching him and his previous fights, what do you believe the keys to victory are?
I’ve not seen much about Calum, but I’ve trained hard for this fight, and as long as I stick to my strengths, I can’t see anything going wrong.
Coming off a loss, I assume you’re extremely eager to right the wrong and give a great account of yourself. What can those attending Rise and Conquer 13 expect to see from you?
People can expect to see me go out there, give it my all, and showcase my improvements.
