WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has expressed his unworried position about the new boxing promotion TKO Boxing.
Dana White and Turki Alalshikh have told the world of there plans to take over boxing with new promotion.
The new boxing promotion has sparked a fire of a conversation in the boxing world with some agreeing on a one belt ecosystem but other believe it to be a monopoly.
TKO boxing has claimed that they will be a single belt promotion, believed to be The Ring Magazine title, with self proclaimed head of boxing operations Dana White saying that “boxing champions wont be defined by three letters before a belt”.
The TKO Boxing head Turki Alalshikh sparked more controversy when a video of Canelo Alvarez and William Scull’s face-off emerged.
It shows Turki allegedly saying no when asked whether the WBC belt could be involved in the face off.
This has many around the boxing world scrambling for answers to how this new era will affect the current governing bodies (WBA,WBC,IBF,WBO).
Whilst the WBA, WBO and IBF haven’t made a strong statement the WBC have chosen otherwise.
They started with cryptic messages over social media where WBC champions showed support saying they are proud to be champions.
Mauricio Sulaiman Makes A Statement-
Now WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has issued a statement defending the TKO promotion and making the WBC clear on its intentions.
“I THINK THE WBC SHOULD MAKE ITS POSITION PUBLIC, WHICH IS (TKO BOXING) IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY. WE HAVE ALWAYS SUPPORTED ANY MOVEMENT, ANY COMPANY, ANY TOURNAMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN PUT TOGETHER.”
He then continued to welcome TKO into the sport claiming its “great”.
“IT SHOULD BE A GREAT THING FOR THE SPORT.”
Sulaiman has made it clear that himself and the WBC believe its a great after Turki’s influence.
“I TRULY BELIEVE THAT WITH THE MULTIBILLION JOINT VENTURE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE TKO AND UFC AND WWE. WHAT HIS EXCELLENCY HAS DONE IN JUST UNDER TWO YEARS. IT SHOULD BE A GREAT THING FOR THE SPORT.”
The two, at least publicly, seem to be on common ground both believing the new promotion to be a great thing but its hard to imagine both continuing this peace treaty.
Especially if Dana White and Turki Alalshikh want to take boxing into a single belt era.
