Max Holloway took on Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 for Gaethje’s BMF Belt. Max Holloway was able to secure a sensational knockout to get the victory which saw his stock rise massively. The former featherweight champion was able to knock out Justin Gaethje in the final second of the fight. This knockout has been proclaimed to be one of the greatest knockouts in UFC history.
Max Holloway to Become Double Champ
This fight against Gaethje was Holloway’s second time trying out the lightweight division after losing to Dustin Poirier last time in 2019. It is safe to say this time around it went a lot smoother as he got the victory. This victory against Gaethje at UFC 300 has opened a lot of doors for him going forward.
Max Holloway used to be the champion at featherweight and held the belt for two-and-a-half years before he eventually lost his belt. Holloway lost his belt to Alexander Volkanovski in December 2019. Holloway then went on to lose a further two times to Volkanovski. However, since they fought last time Volkanovski has since lost the belt to Ilia Topuria. Since his last title shot he has knocked out the Korean Zombie in round 3 and a decision victory against Arnold Allen.
This has left Holloway in pole position and the number one contender in the featherweight division. Topuria was also quick to call out Max Holloway on social media after his performance at UFC 300.
This victory against Gaethje hasn’t only made him a top contender in Featherweight, but, has got him into the title picture at lightweight. This is due to this victory taking place in the lightweight division. During an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Max Holloway talked about his preferred scenario for the future;
“In a perfect world (to me) would be – fight Ilia (145 title), get my hand raised, and whoever’s the next guy up at 55, fight them…try and go for double champ status, whatever it is…or even three belts! You know like, 45, the BMF and put the BMF and the 55 against whoever at 55 and that’d be surreal, you know? I think that’d be crazy!”
Lightweight Title Picture
The lightweight title picture will become a lot clearer after UFC 302. This is due to current champion Islam Makhachev facing Dustin Poirier in the main event on June 1st. At the end of June, Connor McGregor will return to the octagon for the first time in 2 years. This will be against Michael Chandler in a fight which has been scheduled to take place at welterweight.
