Max Holloway is ready for a “dangerous” ‘Korean Zombie‘ in their UFC main event in Singapore. The pair are due to clash in the octagon this Saturday in a bout in which ‘Blessed’ is the overwhelming favourite. Holloway caught up with reporters at the media day to talk about what this fight means to him.
Max Holloway vs. The Korean Zombie Legacy Fight
“This is ‘Korean Zombie’ – a legacy fight in every sense of the way, I believe,” said Holloway. “He has one year and four months to be healed, get healthy, to get better as an athlete, to get better as a person, period. He got to get all his affairs in order, and we’ll see man. I think a dangerous ‘Korean Zombie’ is going to show up come Saturday night, and I’m looking forward to it.”
This will be the first time the featherweight legends have crossed paths, despite both competing in the UFC for over a decade. Former champion Holloway is aware of the talk surrounding his next move, but is fully focused on TKZ. Holloway said: “We’ll see what happens. First things first is ‘Korean Zombie’. At the end of the day, if you look at the rankings, I’m the number one contender and I’ve been busy. I’m over here fighting contenders, fighting a who’s who. Whoever it’s got to be, whoever is up next. I know there’s been some talk about (Topuria), but we’ll see what happens. He just barely beat a guy who just lost to the champ. So I don’t know how that will shake out too much.”
‘Blessed’ finds himself in a difficult situation in the featherweight division having lost three times to champion Alexander Volkanovski. He might not have a clear path ahead, but Holloway is a born fighter who remains the top contender. He looked just as quick and durable as ever against Arnold Allen, and isn’t showing signs of stopping just yet.
Emotional Holloway Addresses Hawaii Wildfires
When asked about the tragic wildfires in his home country, the Hawaiian native Holloway found it hard to contain his emotions. “The Hawaii community, they stepped up. The people stepped up, the Hawaiians stepped up. You guys have seen everything, people helping. The UFC is helping out and so on,” said Holloway. “I just shared my story about how some people ended up passing away… it’s just tough man, they’re the real heroes right now. My walkout song is going to be a dedication to them and they said we should use red to solidify those guys that are in the fire and going through it. I always go in there with Hawaii on my back but it’s a little bit heavy right now.”
It’s clear that Holloway is distraught over the catastrophic events in Hawaii at the moment, but always a consummate professional, he will be committed to the task at hand on Saturday. He will be fighting for more than just another win on his resume, but for his country too.
