UFC Bantamweight Champion Merab Dvalishvili has been outspoken about his thoughts on Umar Numragomedov’s upcoming title shot.
Dvalishvili believes undefeated Nurmagomedov doesn’t deserve the title shot, set for the co-main event of UFC 311. Dvalishvili has voiced his opinion that other fighters in the bantamweight division are more deserving of a title shot, and some fans have supported his view. However, Nurmagomedov’s coach, Javier Mendez, disagrees with Dvalishvili’s claims, offering a strong defence of his fighter’s position.
Javier Mendez Responds to Merab Dvalishvili’s Criticism
Mendez addressed the situation during an interview with Hablemos MMA, responding directly to Dvalihvili’s concerns. Javier Mendez stated the UFC confirmed the winner of Sandhagen vs. Nurmagomedov would receive the next title shot. Mendez emphasized that the UFC’s decision to bring Umar to the Sphere and their promise of a title shot matters.
Mendez clarified that Umar didn’t demand the title shot, but was simply following the UFC’s prior statement:
“UFC wanted this fight,”
Mendez said this, referring to the fight between Nurmagomedov and Merab Dvalishvili. Mendez emphasized Umar’s focus on fighting before Ramadan, not the title shot, showcasing his dedication to competition.
Dvalishvili’s Concerns: A Fear of Losing?
Mendez was also asked about the possibility that Devalishvili’s objections stemmed from a fear of losing his title. While he dismissed the idea that Dvalishvili was scared of Numagomedov, he emphasised that champions don’t fear anyone. According to Mendez, Dvalishvili’s concerns were likely more related to his place in the division and what a potential loss would mean for his title reign.
Mendez also provided insights into how the fight might play out. While many expect both fighters to have a grappling advantage, Mendez believes Nurmagomedov will have an edge in both striking and grappling. He highlighted that, although Dvalishvili is known for his elite wrestling, Nurmagomedov’s all-around skill set and conditioning would give him the advantage. Mendez is confident that Nurmagomedov can handle a full five-round fight, adding that his fighter is prepared to showcase his superiority in both striking and grappling on January 18th.
