Former UFC champion turned commentator Michael Bisping sent a waring to Jon Jones following his recent snub at fighting Tom Aspinall.
At this point, it’s no secret that Tom Aspinall wants to face heavyweight champion Jon Jones for the undisputed gold. A goal that the Englishman continues to campaign for despite the constant lack of interest on Jones’s side.
The talented grappler recently captured the interim title after beating the number one contender, Sergei Pavlovic. Going up against the heavy-handed Russian, most were counting on Aspinall’s ability to bring the fight to the ground as his trump card. However, proving his mettle on the feet, the 30-year-old managed to finish Pavlovic in the very first round. This win didn’t just earn the strap for the Salford native, but also put him in the conversation for a possible matchup against champion Jones. A matchup that ‘Bones’ doesn’t seem to be too keen on taking. However, declining a fight against Aspinall might not be in the best interest of the former Light-Heavyweight, according to this UFC legend.
Michael Bisping Sends Warning for Jon Jones
In one of his recent YouTube video, UFC legend Michael Bisping has sent a warning to the heavyweight champion Jon Jones. According to the veteran, Jones, who already is one of the most decorated names in the sport, has nothing much to gain from a possible matchup against Tom Aspinall. In Bisping’s own words: “He doesn’t have anything to prove, other than he can beat Tom Aspinall.”
However, according to the former champion, there might be consequences for ‘Bones’ dodging this matchup. If Bisping is to be believed, Jones risks creating a narrative of him ‘ducking’ the interim champion, a narrative that already surrounds him in the case of his bitter rivalry with Francis Ngannou. “Because if he does retire right now, that is always going to be the narrative. There are people out there, and I know this annoys Jones, so I’m sorry to bring it up, people say that he avoided Francis Ngannou,” Bisping further explained.
For those wondering, Jones and Ngannou were set to face each other earlier in 2023. But the super fight got derailed after an untimely exit of ‘Predator’ from the promotion. The matchup was a long time in the making as Jones took almost a two-year break from the octagon to finally make his heavyweight debut. This fact, however, is used by many critics of Jones as a basis of their alligation, alleging that he intentionally avoided Ngannou.
Michael Bisping Adds
As per Bisping, avoiding Aspinall might put Jones on the target of similar allegations. As of now, the heavyweight king seems to be persistent on his plan for taking on Stipe Miočić. However, many allege that the ‘younger’ and ‘bigger’ Aspinall might be a better test for the youngest champion in the history of the UFC. “That will forever be the narrative that he’s ducking Tom Aspinall, that he’s afraid of Tom Aspinall. That he looks at Tom Aspinall, this gigantic man, a true heavyweight that moves like a middleweight,” said Bisping.
