Michael Chandler Eyes UFC Title Shot After UFC 309
Michael Chandler, a former Bellator champion and current UFC lightweight, has set his sights on a UFC title shot if he defeats Charles Oliveira at UFC 309. Chandler believes that a win in this high-stakes fight would solidify his position as the No. 1 contender in the lightweight division. Despite his time away from competition, Chandler feels confident that a victory over Oliveira will push him into the title conversation.
Chandler’s Path to a Title After Oliveira Rematch
In his pre-fight media day interview, Chandler expressed his excitement about his position in the UFC:
“I’m just happy I’m in this position, and I don’t even have a fraction of the number of UFC fights Poirier had or Charles has, or some of these other guys,” Chandler said. He added, “But I’ve been in the UFC long enough and fought the toughest guys.” The lightweight division, known for its depth and talent, is where Chandler aims to make his mark.
Reflecting on his journey, Chandler highlighted his past victories, including his knockout win over Dan Hooker. Despite his record, he believes his competitive spirit and high-profile fights have earned him a place in the conversation:
“It’s the most violent and exciting division in the UFC, and I’m so blessed to be a part of it,” Chandler stated, adding that he hopes to “solidify myself as the No. 1 contender” after UFC 309.
Chandler Considers Conor McGregor Fight
Chandler’s focus remains on the title, but he’s also open to other big opportunities, including a potential matchup with Conor McGregor. He noted that a fight with McGregor could still be in the cards, depending on the timing:
“You obviously still got the Conor fight,” Chandler explained. “That’s a possibility depending on when he gets his house in order and when he comes back.”
While he’s eager for a title shot, Chandler is willing to adapt based on circumstances:
“I’m a guy who wants to lay all my chips on the table at times,” he said, hinting at his readiness to take risks for significant matchups. Chandler added, “I’m not saying yes to that. I’m not saying no to that.”
Chandler Reflects on Oliveira Loss
Chandler’s first clash with Oliveira, back in May 2021, saw Oliveira claim the UFC lightweight title after a thrilling second-round stoppage. Now, with Islam Makhachev holding the title and expected to defend it against Arman Tsarukyan in early 2025, Chandler knows his path may depend on the timing of other matchups.
Regardless, he remains confident in his trajectory. If he can defeat Oliveira, Chandler expects to be the next contender. With the lightweight division as competitive as ever, Chandler’s potential title shot could mark a significant shift in the division.
As UFC 309 approaches, Chandler remains laser-focused on his goal. While the fight against Charles Oliveira is his immediate priority, he’s keeping an open mind about potential bouts with high-profile fighters like McGregor. For Chandler, UFC 309 is more than a fight; it’s a crucial step toward his ultimate goal—a title shot in the UFC’s lightweight division.
