Micol Di Segni is on a mission. Fighting in multiple organisations across the world, going 2-1 in her last three fights and owning six finishes in her nine victories. She is as game as they come in the fight world and looks to carry on that vicious momentum.
Next up is Bryony Tyrell at Cage Warriors 144, in Rome, on October 7th, 2022.
Italian-born Di Segni (9-4) will return to the Cage Warriors ring after four years away from the organization. Her last outing under the Cage Warriors banner saw her edge a split decision win over Welsh UFC Strawweight Cory McKenna.
We had the pleasure to talk to Micol a couple of weeks before one of the biggest fights of her career.
Micol Di Segni Interview
Micol, thanks for taking the time out of your schedule to talk to me! How’s camp been? You’re fighting in just a little over two weeks. How have you prepared mentally and physically for this fight? Has anything been different this time around?
“This camp has been great so far. I’ve split my preparation between GBTT in London and Rome, where I’m currently living. I train with the best girls and guys I know, and pushing as hard as I can during training makes me feel I’m doing my best to get the W, so that’s the main focus of my camps: quality training. I have enjoyed a lot of training under Brad Pickett’s guidance, he has a lot of great students, and I really felt at home there. Here in Rome, my coach Lorenzo Borgomeo always helps me and his other fighters to have the best camps, including inviting sparring partners from other gyms, national and international.”
Some great names in both of their camps. It can only be beneficial! Brad Pickett is a legend for us UK MMA fans. How did you meet him? Was it through training at GBTT?
“Brad and my coach were teammates at ATT Miami back in the days, so when I expressed my will to join my friend Manuela Marconetto who was already training at GBTT, my coach contacted him asking if I could go train there. Brad and all the coaches at GBTT have always taken really good care of me, and I’m really grateful for all the knowledge they have shared with me and for the warmth they have welcomed me with at their gym.”
Next fight at CW 144
That’s amazing. I’ve only ever heard great things about Brad, so it comes as no surprise. You’re fighting Bryony Tyrell next. What do you know about her, and how do you think this matchup suits you?
“She is a very experienced fighter who has fought nothing but the best, never stepped away from challenges and even competed in the single disciplines that are part of MMA. So it’s a great opportunity for me to prove that I’m experienced, well-rounded and skilled, I’m facing one of British best, and I’m so ready for it!”
To be the best, you certainly have the beat the best. Is there a fight in your career that stands out as a defining moment? Or any fights, given the opportunity, you’d want again?
“My first appearance at Cage Warriors has definitely been my favourite fight so far, I’ve had a lot of fun, and I left all I had in the cage.
One fight I’m not particularly proud of is my Contenders Series fight, I was physically and mentally devastated going into that fight, so I’d love to have the opportunity to do it again.”
What do you hope to achieve in MMA? What is the ultimate goal for you? Something you can look back on in years to come and think, I achieved that.
“I want the Cage Warriors Strawweight belt.”
How many fights away do you think you are away before getting a title shot?
“Since there has never been a strawweight title on the line, I have no idea. Doesn’t matter much. I’m ready for whatever it takes.”
Final messages
Being the first Strawweight champion would be amazing. I’ll try not to keep you too long. What can we expect to see in your fight at Cage Warriors 144? Can we have an official prediction? Are there any messages or shoutouts you’d like us to share?
“I’m training hard to show the best version of myself, sharp and focused on my goal. I want to offer my city, my people, the best show possible. Fighting in Rome gives me extra motivation, so I want to thank from the bottom of my heart the Italian MMA fans that hurried to secure their ticket for Cage Warriors 144, so we will have a sold-out arena cheering for us!”
