Tonight’s UFC main card features an exciting matchup between the hometown favorite Mike Malott and UFC veteran Neil Magny.
Mike Malott vs. Neil Magny is such an entertaining fight that crept up on us. With Sean Strickland vs. Dricus Du Plessis taking center stage on Saturday, it seemed that Mike Malott vs. Neil Magny flew under the radar. It wasn’t until the press conference that the fans begin to chant Malott’s name and shower Magny with heavy boos, showing what kind of energy that will be brought in Saturday night.
Mike Malott vs. Neil Magny is one of those perfect storm fights. Once it is announced you know that their different styles match up perfectly for a card that many fans seem to feel like is just a glorified Fight Night.
Mike Malott vs. Neil Magny
Who knows if Mike Malott is feeling the pressure, if any, from what will be quite possibly the loudest cheering Canadian fans he has experienced yet – probably louder than when he fought in Vancouver against Adam Fugitt. The ultimate finisher of fights is on a tear in the Welterweight division and looks stronger and more dominant after each win. With Georges St-Pierre retired from MMA, Canada is looking for a new face to champion their country and Malott would be on the right path to be that with a win over a veteran like Neil Magny at UFC 297.
The odds may be stacked against Neil Magny entering enemy territory. Looking at Magny’s record it has been hit or miss lately, with a win here or a loss there, but one thing is for sure he accepts all challengers and never disappoints. What a moment it would be for Magny if he could silence the jam-packed arena with a win over Malott – some might say the sound of silence might be more deafening. A win over Malott and stealing his momentum could put him back on the right path to title contention.
Neil Magny Pulls of Upset Win at UFC 297
Mike Malott done his homework and starts the fight firing at the inside leg of Neil Magny, just as Ian Garry did prior. Magny failed to check any during the first five minutes, heading into the second with a compromised leg. Other than the leg attacks, not much else was landed by the hands of Malott.
As the second rounds starts, Magny throws a leg kick which is immediately checked by Malott. The hometown hero put his full skill-set on display in the second, mixing up his attacks and initiating the grappling. Once the fight hit the mat, it was all Mallot who rained down punches and elbows until the bell.
Malott opens the third firing a leg kick, and taking a deflated Magny to the canvas. The experience of Magny was on display after minimizing the damage and being defensively sound of his back. He was able to get back to his feet, and secure a takedown of his own and end up in a dominate position. Magny ends up in mount and releases a barrage of punches down on Malott forcing the referee to step in with 12-seconds in the third. He pulls of an incredible comeback upset win silencing the home crowd.
