Marney Maxx Inspires Fans with Viral Knockout Victory at Shooto
One-armed MMA fighter Marney Maxx shocked the MMA world with a jaw-dropping first-round knockout on Friday night at Shooto. The inspiring Brazilian continues to prove that determination and skill can overcome any obstacle.
Marney Maxx, born with a congenital amputation of his left arm, has never let his condition define his career. On Friday, he stepped into the cage against Esterferson Da Silva and delivered a spectacular performance, improving his professional record to 6-4.
Maxx’s latest victory adds to an already impressive list of finishes. Highlights include a head-kick knockout against Deivid Costa in January 2022 and a heel-hook submission over Javier Mercado later that year. However, his first-round finish against Da Silva, which saw him set up the KO with a precise left high kick before landing strikes on the ground, may be his most talked-about moment yet.
Maxx Draws Inspiration from Fellow One-Armed Fighters
Maxx’s journey to becoming an MMA fighter wasn’t without setbacks. Growing up in Fortaleza, Brazil, he dreamed of a career in combat sports despite being told it was impossible.
“I started in kung fu and didn’t do well,” Maxx revealed in an interview with MMA Fighting in 2022, “I was knocked out, people would drop me, and I had a hard time breathing. Then I began training Muay Thai and won everything, but still wanted more.”
It was the success of Nick Newell, another one-armed fighter, that inspired Maxx to transition into MMA. Newell, known for his achievements in promotions like World Series of Fighting and Bellator, gave Maxx a role model to follow.
“I wanted to be just like Nick,” Maxx said, explaining how he started training jiu-jitsu to counter opponents who targeted his perceived disadvantage. Today, Maxx proudly carries the nickname “Brazilian Nick Newell,” a testament to the challenges he’s overcame.
The Future for One-Armed MMA Fighter
At an estimated 36 years old, Maxx understands the urgency of making the most of his career.
“I’ve been fighting for an opportunity in society since I was a kid, and it’s hard,” Maxx admitted.
It’s incredible to see inspired athletes with limitations reach new heights in a tough sport like MMA.
