Oscar Ownsworth enters his Badmofo 6 title fight filled with confidence, and rightly so, after riding a six-fight streak without tasting defeat.
Ownsworth will clash with Harry Davies on Saturday, July 15th, in the Barnsley Metrodome for the promotion’s professional lightweight title. After a successful stint in his most recent-outing fighting under the PFL, the Englishman believes that big-stage experience will ensure he comes out on top in Barnsley.
Prior to the fight, we had the opportunity of talking with Oscar Ownsworth. Hear what he had to say below.
Interview With Oscar Ownsworth
Oscar, on July 15th, you have your next opponent and date. How has life been since your appearance on PFL Europe 1 and the victory you attained that night?
It has been great. I was hoping to be fighting on Pfl in Berlin this Saturday but never got an opponent, but this fight against Harry came up the week after and worked out nicely.
Touching on that briefly, for the readers who might not be aware, can you explain how the opportunity came about, the system at PFL Europe, and can we expect to see you back on there in the near future?
So I wasn’t asked by PFL. I was messaged by my opponent’s coach, Andrew Fisher, who asked me if I would like to fight Lewis Monarch, so to get a win on that show and a fight of the night was mega. Yes, my coach has been in talks with them since, and we are now looking at September time.
The experience as a whole, the buzz, the eyes, and everything that comes with fighting in a major organisation. How did you cope with everything, and did it motivate you to get a taste of that big fight feeling?
It’s a weird one because I always knew I would be fighting for PFL. The opportunity came. I wasn’t surprised just felt it was my time, and I’m looking forward to doing it again. I feel the PFL is the next big thing.
Oscar Ownsworth on PFL Debut
On the fight itself, you walked away with a split decision win over Lewis Monarch. Upon reflection, how do you view the fight now, and do you think you’d won the fight?
Yes, I think I comfortably won the 2nd and 3rd rounds just wish I’d finished him in the 3rd, but I was happy with my fight. We put on a great show, and as I said, it was FOTN, so even happier with that.
Your resume, as of late, looks very pleasing to look at, with wins, finishes and a whole lot of green. You’re really fighting with a lot of confidence when you go out there, and it shows? Where is that confidence coming from? Is that a balance between your time in the gym and the results you’re getting?
Yeah, you know this is my life. I’m a true martial artist. This is just coming from the years of sacrifice I have given to the game, and I feel I deserved it because of that sacrifice.
July 15th, you return to the regional scene to fight for the BMF title against Harry Davies. How do you view this fight, and do you feel Harry poses any threat to you on the night?
Yes, there’s a threat from everyone who steps in that octagon. Harry is hungry coming off a big win on FCC, but this is my title, and he’s not taking that away from me.
Harry recently just returned back into the win column after eight straight losses. What do you make of his pro-career thus far?
I watched his last fight live, and in his post-fight interview, he admitted he hasn’t been training properly over the past few years and is back training, so I think I’ll get the best version of him on the night. That being said, I’ve been none stop for the past 11 years. I’m levels above him, and it will show on the night.
Finally, you defeat Harry on July 15th and claim the vacant belt. What’s next for you? Have you even thought that far ahead?
I always wanted triple champ status, so I will have achieved what I set out to do on the regional scene, so working towards getting back on the bug shows, whether that’s PFL Oktagon or even Cage Warriors, that’s where I feel I need to be.
